About the event
In celebration of Black Pearl's 10th Anniversary, we are celebrating the accomplishments of African-American women in classical music. From 6:00 - 7:00 the concert opens with string quartet and woodwind quintet performances including music by African-American women composers including Valerie Coleman and Jessie Montgomery. Then at 7:30, Black Pearl Orchestra will be joined by pianist Michelle Cann as the soloist for the Philadelphia premiere of the Piano Concert in One Movement by Florence Price, the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Amanda Nicole Collins also joins the orchestra as the soloist for Mozart's exuberant Horn Concerto No. 3, K. 477. This concert has been generously underwritten with grants from the Presser Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. We are also deeply grateful to PECO and EPAM for their sponsorship of this event.
